The foundation every smile is built on
Gum disease is one of the most common reasons adults lose teeth, and in its early stages it is often painless. Treating it early protects both your teeth and the bone that holds them.
It starts with plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) along the gum line. The gums become inflamed and may bleed. Left untreated, the infection can spread below the gum, forming pockets that damage the bone and loosen teeth.
Our care ranges from ultrasonic scaling and root planing to laser-assisted therapy, flap surgery, gum contouring, crown lengthening, tissue grafting and gum depigmentation for dark gums.
Signs of gum disease
Gums should not bleed when you brush. These are the warning signs to have checked.
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Gums pulling back from the teeth
- Teeth that feel loose or have shifted
- Dark patches on the gums you would like treated
Diabetes, smoking and pregnancy all raise the risk of gum disease, so regular checks matter even more if any apply to you.

The process
What to expect, step by step. Your own timeline is confirmed once we have examined you.
We measure gum pockets around every tooth and take X-rays to check the bone.
Visit 1Ultrasonic scaling removes tartar, and root planing smooths the root surfaces so the gums can heal.
One or more visitsDeep pockets may need laser therapy or flap surgery. Cosmetic concerns can be treated with contouring or depigmentation.
If neededRegular cleanings, usually every six months, keep the gums healthy and stop the disease returning.

Early gum disease (gingivitis) can be reversed. More advanced disease can be controlled and stopped from getting worse with treatment and regular maintenance.
Every six months for most people. If you have had gum disease, we may recommend more frequent maintenance visits.
